Half of Irish firms to freeze recruitment

Date: 16th July 2010

SFA report points to recruitment freezeA number of small businesses across the country are set to put recruitment freezes in place before then end of the year, according to a new report.

Figures released by the Small Firms Association (SFA) have revealed that 50 per cent of the country's smaller organisations will freeze recruitment processes within the next three months.

The report also showed that three out of five firms cannot see employee numbers increasing, saying they are likely to remain the same in 2011.

Avine McNally, SFA director, commented: "This is a reflection of the series of actions which have been taken by many small firms to try and reduce costs and regain cost competitiveness; however, we cannot become complacent, many jobs are still at risk.

"It is vital that the government prioritise the restoration of cost competitiveness to the small business sector; generate confidence in the economy and create the enterprise environment where job losses can be stabilised and jobs can be preserved and created."
