There is significant relief available in Ireland for companies seeking to achieve a scientific or technological advancement.

The R&D Tax credit was introduced in Ireland to encourage investment in Research & Development by companies. It is particularly important as companies must continue to undertake research and development to ensure they stay competitive in the current global economy.

Who can apply?

This relief is available for Research & Development activities carried out in various industries such as food and beverage production, agriculture and horticulture, engineering, software development and more.

The credits are not just for large companied and multi-national companies and SMEs can apply.

What can I get?

There are two Research & Development credits available:
  1. SME R&D Tax Relief and the Research
  2. Development Expenditure Credit (RDEC).

The SME credit is calculated at 25% of eligible expenditure and is used to reduce a company's Corporation Tax (CT) bill. On top this the RDEC credit is calculated at 12.5% and is trading deduction available for revenue expenditure, for things like salaries and equipment used in R&D.

In reality this means that successful companies can claim a repayable tax credit calculated at 37.5% of the spend on Research & Development activities.

Revenue have extremely detailed guidelines that companies need to follow when claiming these credits. Each claim is extensive and unique to the claimant.
